11/18/2008

I live in New York City.

I'm concerned about two particular FM radio stations I've been getting with good reception for over ten years. In the past month I've lost reception completely on one of them, not trace of signal, the other has become very weak.
I called the stations a couple of times and persons I spoke to hadn't heard of problems from other listeners.
My tuner also receives AM. Ironically I now get a slightly stronger signal on a talk radio station, which if I turn up the volume, can now be heard but with much noise.

What do you think is going on?
I understand that the new introduction of HD T.V. transmissions may cause interference but that is not scheduled
until February.
Has is started already in part?
I really wish I could get my old reception back.

Hi Peter,

There are possibilities but not knowing your reception setup I can list the obvious such as degradation of coax, etc but my guess is that you have considered that sort of thing. Contacting the radio station was an excellent thing to do.

There is an FM tuner forum in the post above that has members from New York plus it is very active so perhaps people have experienced what you have or can suggest what the issue may be. Is it environmental? Is it electronic? A combination? You want to know that and I just cannot tell you remotely (though I would love to be in NY now).

Sorry I couldn't be any more help than that but I believe you could get at least some part of your issue explained if you would share it with the Yahoo FM Tuner forum members.

Regards,
Lake

I am limited to an indoor FM antenna, what do you recomend for best quality.
What do you think about this (Magnum Dynalab - SR100 Indoor FM Antenna).

Hi Ron,

I have not used the MD SR100 myself but it is an interesting idea and the comments have been generally favorable about it. Indoors I really like plain old rabbit ears. It is discussed a bit more in the FM Reception Guide on this site.
