Sangean PR-D5 AM FM Radio Is a Winner!

Needed something to test as there has been little news lately with AM or FM reception equipment so finally broke down and picked up one of the Sangean PR-D5 AM FM Radios from Amazon.

I love this radio! I do a lot of program listening due to talk radio and sports and it is great for that but is very strong in several areas.

Went head-to-head with the smaller Grundig G4000 and reception was so close a difference really couldn’t be noticed. There are a few “test” stations here because of them being on the fringe and was able to pick up stations equally strong on both with is great because the Grundig is one of my favorites. You probably know that the Kaito KA2100 is a favorite radio here but it is also big and the Sangean PR-D5 comes in almost exactly between the Grundig G4000 and the Kaito KA2100. It is very light without batteries but the 6 C-sized batteries will add considerable weight. In a way, it is like the C batteries are to add to the point that this radio isn’t too big and it isn’t too small, it is just right.

Stations on the Sangean PR-D5 came in as strong as the Grundig G4000 but were more listenable with the Sangean Pr-D5. The stereo speakers just sounded far better than the Grundig’s lone mono speaker. Both radios accept headphones and that would, of course, even this area up. Headphones aren’t cool for the long-haul though and for listening in a room the Sangean PR-D5 is the clear winner.

When first mentioning the Sangean PR-D5 a few months ago we talked about the strange appearance of the radio but, in all fairness, it is just fine when in hand. The display is wonderfully large and has a backlight and the radio even has RDS which more and more stations are using now to identify themselves.
