The Big HDTV Secret: Satellite vs Cable
HDTV broadcast signals are not all the same because compression levels vary depending upon how it is received. Compression is using technology to shrink the file size or in this case the stream while trying to preserve picture quality. Compression affects fast motion the most such as sporting events or action shows.
Currently, the highest quality signal is provided directly from the broadcast TV stations over “old-fashioned” antennas. One misunderstood fact is that there is no such thing as an HDTV antenna. Antennas used in the 1950s will work just as well, if the same condition and style, as a modern antenna.
Next highest quality for HDTV is via satellite delivery from DirecTV or Dish Network.
Currently, the lowest quality HDTV signal is provided by the various cable operators such as Comcast or Time Warner and others. This is due to bandwidth restrictions that the cable companies face.
There is always debate about whether DirecTV or Dish Network delivers better HDTV signals and ultimately it is six of one, half a dozen of the other; the quality is simply too close to make a call. With this in mind, find the channels you are most interested in and make a determination based on that as there are some programming differences between the two satellite carriers.
